Digital Photography – Glass ceiling in Union Station

May 17th, 2011 No comments

This is a shot of a glass ceiling in Union Station – Los Angeles, California. It was shot with a Nikon D80 using the 18-135mm kit lens. Union station is a great place for street photography and architectural photography. It is also easily accessible via the metro. I would like to go back and do some HDR experimentation. You need to sign a release if you want to use a tripod.

Darkroom: Fountain in front of Father’s Office

May 4th, 2011 No comments

This is a fountain in front of Father’s Office in Culver City, CA. This was shot made with Fuji Neopan Acros 100 film. I used my Pentax 6×7 with a 105mm lens. I wanted the water to look softer. I could not get a long enough exposure because this was in afternoon day light so I used a tripod and a Hoya ND8 neutral density filter. This was scanned from a 8×10 print that I made in my home darkroom. I really like the smooth tonality and detail you get with a large medium format negative. The print shows this much better than the scan here does.

Darkroom: Finaly made a good print.

April 30th, 2011 No comments

Recently I have been assembling a home darkroom. I did this because I have a lot of camera gear left over from when film was still king. Rather than selling it on Ebay for pennies on the dollar I decided to put it to good use. Being able to develop and print my own pictures is a lot of fun. I used to do this in photo class back in high school. Pictures produced with the analog wet method have a different feel than digital. However you do not just start printing and get great results right away. There is a leaning curve and it takes some time to refine your darkroom processes. Thanks to all the support I received from the APUG forums I have finally made a good print. Here is the scan of the 8×10 print of my cat “Fred” in a tree:
